Pedro Alliana becomes Paraguay's president after Santiago Peña's impeachment over Ueno Bank collapse
Pedro Alliana has been sworn in as Paraguay's president following the impeachment of Santiago Peña over the collapse of Ueno Bank, which froze the savings of millions of customers. Alliana has pledged to fully compensate those affected by the banking scandal. All 44 senators voted to remove Peña on Friday, and prosecutors later placed him under house arrest on suspicion of breach of trust, influence peddling, and using public office for personal gain. The impeachment stemmed from allegations that Peña used political influence to benefit the lender, including directing $355 million in state pension funds to the bank. Peña, who denies wrongdoing, becomes the second Paraguayan president removed by impeachment since 1989. The crisis has affected about three million Ueno customers, nearly two-thirds of Paraguay's adult population, and has weakened the national currency. Prosecutors have also charged at least 27 people, including the bank's founder, in a separate investigation.
