Paraguay's Senate impeaches President Peña over Ueno Bank collapse
Paraguay's right-wing President Santiago Peña has been removed from office after the Senate voted unanimously for his impeachment, following the Chamber of Deputies' earlier decision. His removal stems from a banking scandal linked to Ueno Bank. Peña faced impeachment over the collapse of Ueno Bank, a digital bank founded in 2021 where he was a shareholder until March 2025. The Central Bank seized the bank Tuesday, citing a solvency ratio below half the legal minimum, freezing accounts for 3 million clients and triggering eight arrests. Peña, a conservative Colorado Party leader and close ally of Donald Trump, had resigned Thursday, but Congress rejected his resignation and pursued impeachment. He had also sought the dismissal of Central Bank President Carlos Carvallo, whom he had appointed.
