Paraguay Swears In Alliana as President After Peña Removed Over Bank Crisis
Pedro Alliana has been sworn in as Paraguay's new president after Santiago Peña was officially removed by parliament following a banking crisis that has left nearly 3 million of the country's 6.5 million citizens unable to access their savings. The 52-year-old Alliana, who served as vice president under Peña, will remain interim president until the next elections in 2028. Both men belong to the conservative Colorado party. Peña had submitted his resignation earlier this week, but parliament rejected it and voted unanimously for his removal. Peña has been placed under house arrest after prosecutors issued an arrest warrant, citing his ties to Ueno bank, which was placed under central bank control due to financial problems. The crisis has triggered street protests, and Alliana has promised compensation for affected citizens.
