Pakistan PM warns India: Indus water diversion is 'act of war'

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif warned at the UN General Assembly on Friday that any attempt to stop, impede, or divert Pakistan's share of Indus waters would be treated as an "act of war," escalating rhetoric over the river system. Sharif criticized India's decision to place the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance, calling the move "no legal basis whatsoever." He asserted that Pakistan's position has been vindicated by international proceedings, including the Court of Arbitration. The treaty, signed in 1960, allocates eastern rivers to India and western rivers primarily to Pakistan. India placed the treaty in abeyance in April 2025 following the Pahalgam attack, citing Pakistan's support for cross-border terrorism.
