Jaishankar meets Iranian, Russian foreign ministers on UNGA sidelines

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with his Russian and Iranian counterparts on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, discussing bilateral ties and regional issues days after the U.S. signed new sanctions targeting oil purchases from both nations. Jaishankar and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reviewed bilateral cooperation and BRICS coordination, with the Russian ministry noting discussions on the Ukraine crisis and Middle East situation. The ministers affirmed their commitment to strengthening the "special and privileged strategic partnership" and maintaining close coordination at the UN, G20, and BRICS. Jaishankar also met Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi to discuss the Gulf conflict. India has stated it remains committed to ensuring energy security for its 1.4 billion people through diversified sourcing, following the U.S. 'Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026'.
