India condemns attacks on commercial shipping at UNGA, says targeting seafarers 'unacceptable'

India told the UN General Assembly that targeting commercial shipping and seafarers amid Gulf conflicts is "simply unacceptable," urging restraint and de-escalation. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stressed protecting civilians and ensuring uninterrupted energy and commerce flows. Jaishankar cited attacks from the Gulf and Red Sea to the Black Sea, noting Indian and other seafarers have lost lives. He announced India joined Liberia and 23 partners in a Group of Friends initiative to rally global opinion against such targeting, emphasizing strict adherence to international law. Recent incidents include the MV Cape Dao attack in the Gulf of Oman, killing an Indian sailor, and the El Gaia strike in the Strait of Hormuz. Indian seafarers face heightened risks across key maritime routes, including the Red Sea and Black Sea.
