Foreign Secretary meets U.S. delegation over Russia sanctions law tensions

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met a five-member U.S. Congressional delegation on Sunday to discuss tensions over a new Russia sanctions law that targets Indian oil purchases, amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to address the issue. The delegation, led by House Foreign Affairs Committee chair Brian Mast, included bill co-sponsor Jimmy Patronis and lawmakers James Gallagher and Hailey Stevens, who voted for the legislation, as well as Shri Thanedar, who opposed it. The meeting follows External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar raising concerns with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, with a U.S. determination on sanctions expected within 30 days. The Lindsey O. Graham Sanctions against Russia and Iran Act mandates up to 100% sanctions on buyers of Russian oil. Officials did not confirm whether waiver assurances were discussed, though talks covered energy security, counter-terrorism, and freedom of navigation.
