India Slams Attacks on Gulf Seafarers as 'Unacceptable' at UN

India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar told the UN General Assembly on Saturday that attacks on commercial shipping and seafarers in the Gulf are "simply unacceptable," citing the loss of lives as a major concern. He specifically referenced recent incidents, including an attack on the MV Cape Dao in the Gulf of Oman that killed an Indian sailor and a strike on the El Gaia tanker. Jaishankar also launched a "Group of Friends" initiative with 23 partners to rally global action on maritime safety. Jaishankar further voiced concern over the "weaponisation of everything," saying this trend creates chokepoints in finance, supply chains, and technology. He stressed that the Global South faces a "4F crisis" of food, fuel, fertiliser, and finance insecurity, and called for restraint and de-escalation from all parties.
