Pew Survey: Global Majority Expects AI to Cut Jobs, Not Create Them

A new Pew Research Center survey across 37 countries finds that more people expect artificial intelligence to reduce jobs than create them over the next 20 years, with a median of 46% predicting job losses compared to 9% expecting gains. Expectations of job losses are significantly higher in wealthier nations, with a median of 55% in high-income countries versus 36% in middle-income ones. Australia and South Korea had the highest shares at 76% each, followed by the U.S. at 71%, up from 64% in August 2024. The survey also found that awareness of AI is higher in wealthier countries, and those with more awareness are more likely to expect job losses. The report, based on interviews with 42,151 adults conducted between February and May, notes that opinion in middle-income countries may still be forming.
