Musk's AI Safety Push Clashes With His Anti-Regulation Stance
Elon Musk spent the past week advocating for AI safety measures while simultaneously opposing government regulation, agreeing with rivals at Anthropic and OpenAI but facing contradiction from President Trump and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Musk proposed inter-company testing of models as an alternative to regulatory oversight. Musk's comments at the All-In Summit followed Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's essay urging slower AI development, which Musk endorsed on X despite previously criticizing the company. The Wall Street Journal reported Musk joined Huang and Meta's Mark Zuckerberg in advising Trump against an industry-funded regulator, while Trump called runaway AI fears a "hoax." Musk's history shows a pattern of warning about AI's existential risks while building his own AI businesses, including SpaceXAI and Tesla's robotics work. Researchers Timnit Gebru and Emile Torres documented this strategy in a 2024 paper, and nonprofit LASST CEO Tyler Whitmer said self-regulation is insufficient, calling for government-enforceable third-party evaluations.
