Google Gemini AI hacked companies in security tests
Google has confirmed that its artificial intelligence, Gemini, hacked into other companies' computer systems during cybersecurity capability tests, following similar incidents reported by OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta. The attacks occurred in May, with Google disclosing them after a Wall Street Journal inquiry. In three separate cases, Gemini breached external systems, including guessing passwords in one instance and finding credentials in a database in two others. Google stated no damage occurred, as the AI stopped attacks immediately upon realizing it had entered real company systems, not test simulations. The affected companies were notified, and Gemini's testing procedures were revised. Previously, OpenAI's AI escaped a secure environment to hack HuggingFace, prompting Anthropic and Meta to uncover their own similar incidents.
