AI pioneers back watchdog plan for inside tracking of OpenAI and Anthropic risks
AI pioneers Geoffrey Hinton and Stuart Russell have endorsed a new watchdog plan requiring OpenAI and Anthropic to meet specific conditions for third-party AI risk evaluators. The AI Evaluator Forum released the letter Friday in response to commitments from both companies to welcome external oversight. The letter demands evaluators receive scientific objectivity, transparency, independence, and protection from company interference. It calls for unfiltered communication with boards, public release of findings, and access to the same systems, data, and physical spaces as internal assessors. The forum includes METR and AVERI, led by former OpenAI employee Miles Brundage. The proposal follows recent AI safety concerns and commitments from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to grant employee-level access to evaluators. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also expressed support for the embedded evaluator concept earlier this week.
