Anthropic runs 30,000 AI agents internally, with Claude leading 26% of R&D work

Anthropic has published metrics showing that as of August 2026, its Claude AI system leads 26% of the company's AI research and development tasks, with approximately 30,000 AI agents operating simultaneously on its internal platforms. The company introduced the "Anthropic R&D Automation Index" to measure AI involvement across six levels. While 26% of R&D work reached Level 4, where AI handles most tasks with broad human direction, over 90% involved at least Level 3 collaboration. No tasks achieved Level 5 full autonomy. Anthropic reported monitoring over one billion AI agent decisions in August 2026, with humans reviewing about 50 high-priority cases weekly. During one week in July, roughly 6% of AI R&D computing resources were allocated to safety research. The company plans continued metric publication and third-party verification.
