UN chief urges US-China-EU talks on AI safety

zeit.de (German)

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for serious AI safety talks between the US, China, and Europe, warning against an unregulated arms race in artificial intelligence development. Guterres cited the post-Cuban Missile Crisis US-Soviet dialogue as a model, stressing the need for guardrails and trust between major powers. He welcomed US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's openness to AI safety discussions with China. The call comes ahead of a UN Security Council session on AI next week, where OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is expected to speak. Anthropic also announced a $1 billion investment with Accenture for independent AI model testing.
