Anthropic says Claude leads 26% of its AI R&D work
Anthropic revealed that its AI chatbot Claude "leads" 26 percent of its AI research and development work, meaning the AI completes most tasks end-to-end with human supervision. The disclosure came alongside proposed industry measurement standards for tracking AI development pace. The company stated AI performs "large chunks of work under close human direction" on over 90 percent of its research, though Claude is not fully autonomous for any measured subset. Anthropic developed these metrics using an automation rating scale from Epoch AI, charting Claude's automation level since August 2025. Anthropic also proposed measuring AI agent oversight and compute devoted to AI R&D to improve transparency. The company has committed to third-party evaluations, and CEO Dario Amodei's safety stance has drawn agreement from Elon Musk, though federal regulation remains uncertain under President Trump.
