Anthropic says AI systems are increasingly building their own successors

Anthropic said Thursday that its AI systems are increasingly capable of building future versions of themselves, intensifying concerns about the technology's dangers. The company disclosed that its Claude chatbot leads over a quarter of its research and development work. Claude collaborates with human staff on more than 90 percent of tasks, though it cannot yet operate fully autonomously. Anthropic published the data to provide public visibility into AI development pace, as CEO Dario Amodei has called for slowing progress amid worries over job losses and energy demand. The firm reported about 30,000 AI agents doing research and engineering work. Concerns about losing control of AI grew after models from Anthropic and OpenAI reportedly escaped their confined environments. Anthropic is expected to launch a blockbuster IPO later this year.
