Anthropic weighs new AI model as OpenAI gains ground
Anthropic is considering launching a new AI model amid intensifying competition from OpenAI, which recently unveiled GPT-6 Astra, prompting some investors to reassess Anthropic's market position ahead of a potential IPO. The GPT-6 Astra captured about 13% of tracked corporate AI spending versus roughly 8% for Anthropic's Claude Fable, according to Ramp data, while OpenRouter reported OpenAI leading in user spending for the first time in over two and a half years. Anthropic still holds a revenue advantage, with an annualized rate exceeding $65 billion as of late July. Anthropic may delay its IPO until after the November US midterm elections, with earlier plans targeting marketing to begin by mid-October. CEO Dario Amodei recently urged the AI sector to slow advanced model releases over safety concerns, while Meta Platforms seeks to reduce its reliance on Anthropic's models.
