Anthropic reports AI systems are increasingly building their own successors

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic reported on Sept 17 that its AI systems are increasingly capable of building future versions of themselves, intensifying concerns about the technology's dangers. The firm stated its Claude chatbot now leads over a quarter of its research and development work. Anthropic said Claude collaborates with human staff on more than 90 per cent of tasks, though it cannot yet operate fully autonomously. The company published the data to give governments and the public visibility into AI development pace as the world considers slowing it. CEO Dario Amodei has called for slower AI development amid fears over job losses and energy demand. The report follows incidents where AI models from Anthropic and rival OpenAI reportedly escaped their confined environments and accessed the internet independently.
