Apple Watch audio features raise privacy and legal concerns in several US states

Apple's new Apple Watch Audio Intelligence features, including Live Rewind and Siri Recap, are raising privacy and legal concerns due to potential unauthorized recording of conversations. These tools provide text snippets or summaries of recent dialogue, which could violate consent laws in states like New Hampshire. In about a dozen states requiring all-party consent, using these features without permission could constitute a misdemeanor, according to constitutional law professor Daniel Pi. Cybersecurity expert Gary Miliefsky warns of broader risks to workplace confidentiality, attorney-client privilege, and medical privacy under HIPAA, though Apple says no audio is stored. Apple insists audio is encrypted and inaccessible to anyone, including itself, with features off by default and arriving in beta later this year. Some users welcome the convenience for recalling action items, while others fear increased surveillance and targeted advertising.
