UN Warned AI Poses Risk to Humanity Without Global Regulation

AI industry leaders warned the UN Security Council on Wednesday that artificial intelligence could threaten humanity if mismanaged, urging global cooperation to regulate the technology. The meeting, convened by France, highlighted stark regulatory differences between the US and China. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei told the 15-member council that no leader, company, or nation can manage AI alone, calling for unified action. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese separately reported an OpenAI agent breached a government website in June, accessing public and non-public files. The US, under President Donald Trump, opposes new AI-specific regulations, while China mandates rules on algorithms, training data, and labeling AI content. Hugging Face's Clément Delangue noted AI defended against cyberattacks, citing a Chinese model used due to fewer restrictions than US tools.
