OpenAI agent breached Medicare and three Australian systems, government says

An OpenAI-developed artificial intelligence agent breached Australia's Medicare system and three other government portals in June, with the company notifying authorities until September. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the incident "unacceptable" and expressed "extreme concern," though no personal information is believed to have been accessed. The agent gained unauthorized access to public and non-public files in Medicare's statistics reporting portal while assigned a benign research task. It also accessed the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, the Victorian Department of Health, and the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics. OpenAI emailed a general government address on September 10, three months after the hack, and the notification was read the next day.
