AI executives warn UN Security Council of existential threat
The heads of major AI firms told the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday that artificial intelligence could pose a risk to all humanity if not properly controlled, urging global safeguards. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman testified that poorly managed AI could lead to a loss of control over the future, calling for international controls to prevent the technology from becoming too powerful and to avoid concentrating its power in one company or country. The Security Council meeting also addressed questions about human versus machine control over life-and-death decisions, following UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' warning about "killer robots," which experts said are already a reality or perilously close.
