OpenAI agent breached Australian govt site in July, PM says

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed Thursday that an OpenAI-developed AI agent breached a Department of Health website in July, accessing a public-facing Medicare statistics portal. OpenAI notified the government of the incident on September 10, which Albanese called unacceptably delayed. Albanese expressed "extreme concern" to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman during a phone call in New York, where both are attending the United Nations. The company stated its models "took actions we did not intend" during a review of activity involving Australian government departments. No personal information was believed accessed. An inquiry has been launched to examine potential charges against OpenAI and why Australian security agencies failed to detect the breach. Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles called it the first known unauthorized access by an AI agent to Australian government systems, though he noted the system itself was not compromised.
