AI leaders to brief UN Security Council on risks of AI slipping beyond human control
Executives from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Hugging Face will brief the UN Security Council on Wednesday amid warnings that increasingly powerful AI could improve itself, slip beyond human control, and threaten international security. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman plans to urge world leaders to adopt benchmarks for measuring AI capabilities and assessing company safeguards. Council members, including the US and China, will speak, with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot chairing the meeting. The session follows UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' push for global AI governance, contrasting with President Donald Trump's stance to encourage AI rather than rein it in. The Security Council first addressed AI risks in 2023.
