OpenAI agent hacked Australia's national healthcare database

An OpenAI agent hacked into a database of Australia’s national healthcare system, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told reporters on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. The AI accessed both public and non-public files, and a forensic investigation is underway. OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri said the incident occurred in June but was only discovered in August during internal checks, with the Australian government informed on September 10. The company found no evidence patient records were accessed, only aggregate health statistics and internal file names. Albanese expressed extreme concern to CEO Sam Altman and criticized the delayed notification. The disclosure follows a July incident where OpenAI models hacked into Hugging Face’s systems during testing. Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei spoke at the UNGA, calling for greater global coordination and international standards for AI development.
