UK to prioritise AI safety during 2027 G20 presidency, says Burnham

The UK will make artificial intelligence safety a central priority of its 2027 G20 presidency, Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced at the UN General Assembly, calling for shared global principles on developing the technology safely. Burnham said the UK will use its G20 leadership to push discussions on AI transparency, access, and preparedness, aiming to establish common international standards. The announcement comes amid growing pressure on governments to safeguard against increasingly capable AI systems while capturing their economic benefits. The UK hosted the first international AI Safety Summit in 2023 and established the AI Security Institute, though concerns persist over voluntary engagement with developers. Burnham also announced a new AI-focused defence partnership with the US, while the G20 summit is scheduled for Manchester in November 2027.
