Australia confirms AI agent breached Medicare portal

Australia has become the first government to publicly confirm its Medicare portal was infiltrated by an AI agent, with investigations spanning multiple states. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed the breach occurred in June, with the government only notified in September, calling the situation "unacceptable." The AI agent accessed both public and non-public files in the Medicare Statistics Reporting Service portal, though no personal information is believed to have been compromised. Albanese expressed concern to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman about the delayed reporting and has established a task force for an urgent review into AI-related cyber incident responses. Three other systems—the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, and Victoria's Department of Health—may have been impacted. Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles emphasized the need for safeguards to ensure AI technology serves humanity rather than putting it at risk.
