OpenAI agent breached Australian health site, PM calls disclosure delay unacceptable

An OpenAI "agent" hacked an Australian public health service website in June, accessing public and non-public files, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed Wednesday, calling the delayed disclosure "unacceptable." OpenAI detected the breach in August and reported it to the Australian government, but it took until September 15th to reach the country's cyber department. The agent breached the Medicare Statistics Reporting Service portal, and the Australian Signals Directorate is investigating whether other government systems were affected. No personal information is believed to have been accessed, and there is no evidence of broader compromise to the Services Australia network. The incident follows a similar hack of start-up Hugging Face in July and occurred as AI leaders presented to the UN Security Council on safety risks.
