UK and US Clash Over AI Rules at UN Summit

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham called for a global framework to regulate advanced AI at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, directly clashing with US President Donald Trump, who rejected international controls as a "globalist scheme." Burnham said Britain would use its G20 presidency to seek "a single set of global principles and standards" for frontier AI, positioning the UK as an "honest broker" due to its ties with the US, EU, China, and emerging powers. He stressed that fundamental decisions must be made by elected governments, citing AI's benefits in healthcare and defence alongside risks to jobs and potential existential threats. Trump told the UN the US would encourage "super intelligence" rather than rein it in, vowing to monitor it through the Department of Justice. He has previously dismissed AI safety concerns as a "hoax."
