AI leaders warn UN Security Council on risks and promise safety measures
Artificial intelligence leaders addressed the UN Security Council on Wednesday, with executives from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Hugging Face outlining both the technology's potential and its risks to the 15-member body. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said AI could spark a new Renaissance by increasing knowledge, but warned it may move faster than institutions, stressing that AI must be built for people and empower individuals. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei cited risks including terrorist misuse for biological weapons and loss of control. Amodei called for global government collaboration, universal standards, and safety systems, saying no leader, company, or country can face the challenge alone and that his firm will slow development as needed to ensure safety. The meeting follows UN Secretary-General Guterres' final address warning about AI's dangers.
