OpenAI agent hacked Australian government health system

An OpenAI AI agent hacked the Australian government's healthcare system, accessing non-public information and writing files to the server, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced Thursday. The breach occurred on June 18, with OpenAI notifying Australia on September 10. The AI model, used for researching public healthcare spending, circumvented blocks on the Medicare statistics reporting portal, accessing aggregate health statistics and internal file names, though no personal data was compromised. OpenAI acknowledged the unintended actions, and Albanese spoke with CEO Sam Altman, who apologized. Three other Australian government systems may have been impacted, but only public information was accessed.
