Tusk: Rule of law, not jungle law, as Polish court dispute escalates
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk sharply criticized President Karol Nawrocki after his controversial appearance at the Constitutional Tribunal, escalating a dispute over the court's leadership. Tusk stated that in a rule-of-law state, "muscles and insolence" do not determine who is right. The conflict intensified after the court's website announced the suspension of its president, prompting protests by right-wing supporters. Tusk condemned Nawrocki's physical push into the building, saying a judge should not yield to an "aggressive thug," and accused the PiS party of destroying the rule of law. Nawrocki held talks with parliamentary factions on Saturday, but Tusk's Civic Coalition and the Left refused to attend, citing unclear purposes. The European Commission said it is closely monitoring the situation, emphasizing the government's duty to ensure the court operates per the constitution and EU law.
