Polish President Accuses PM Tusk of Forced Constitutional Tribunal Takeover
Poland's President Karol Nawrocki accused Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Saturday of orchestrating a forced takeover of the Constitutional Tribunal, deepening the country's political crisis. Poland's ambassador to Romania resigned in response. The crisis escalated Friday night when judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska suspended tribunal head Bogdan Swieczkowski and assumed leadership. Nawrocki, allied with the former nationalist PiS government, called it a breach of public order, while Tusk defended the move as necessary to restore rule of law. The dispute stems from 2015 PiS appointments that critics say compromised the court's independence. Tusk's coalition has sought reforms since 2023, which Nawrocki has blocked. Poland's ambassadors to Romania and China have both resigned over the situation.
