EU urges Poland's president to approve eight new judges
The European Commission has urged Poland's president to approve the appointment of eight new judges, following his consultations with political leaders aimed at resolving the country's institutional crisis. The request comes amid ongoing tensions over the Constitutional Tribunal's functioning. A Commission spokesperson stated that Polish authorities must ensure the Constitutional Tribunal operates in line with the Polish Constitution and relevant EU Court of Justice jurisprudence. The appointments fall under the constitutional competence of the Sejm, Poland's lower house of parliament. President Karol Nawrocki has so far refused to ratify the appointments, which were made by the centrist majority. The dispute is part of a broader political and institutional standoff between the government and the presidency.
