Protests in Poland after top judge suspended in court dispute
Protests erupted outside a courthouse in Warsaw after Poland's justice minister suspended the head of the Constitutional Tribunal and his deputy, a move the court condemned as a "coup" while the prime minister defended it as necessary. Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek suspended Bogdan Święczkowski and his deputy for one month to pursue criminal charges against them, according to BBC. Święczkowski, backed by opposition leader Jarosław Kaczyński, attempted to enter the building but was blocked by riot police, and three people were arrested. The tribunal, long criticized by EU courts as no longer "independent and impartial" after PiS-stacked appointments, has been a flashpoint in Poland's rule-of-law dispute. President Karol Nawrocki, a PiS ally, cut short a trip to Senegal, while Prime Minister Donald Tusk said restoring the rule of law requires "resolute action."
