EU urges Poland to resolve Constitutional Tribunal crisis
The European Commission has called on Polish authorities to ensure the Constitutional Tribunal functions properly, in line with the country's constitution and EU court rulings. The statement was made by Justice Commissioner Michael McGrath on Sunday, November 1. McGrath emphasized that appointing new Tribunal judges falls under the constitutional powers of the Polish Sejm. He stressed that Polish authorities are obligated to enable the Tribunal to operate according to national law and EU Court of Justice practice. The Commission is closely monitoring the situation. McGrath referenced the Venice Commission's October 13 opinion and a European Court of Human Rights ruling from May 5, which ordered Polish authorities not to obstruct judges elected by the Sejm in March.
