Tusk accuses nationalist opposition of seeking to destroy democracy in Poland
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk accused conservative and nationalist opposition leaders on Saturday of seeking to "destroy democracy and the rule of law," following clashes at the Constitutional Tribunal. The statement came a day after police intervened as supporters of the right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) party protested the suspension of tribunal president Bogdan Swieczkowski. Protesters chanted "Tusk the traitor" and tried to breach security barriers. Tusk described Friday's incidents as "horrifying," and police detained three people. His government has been trying to remove judges appointed during PiS's 2015-2023 rule, while President Karol Nawrocki accused the government of orchestrating a forced takeover. Poland's ambassador to Romania resigned over the crisis.
