Polish President Calls Crisis Talks to Defuse Constitutional Court Standoff
Polish President Karol Nawrocki convened urgent crisis talks with party representatives on Saturday to resolve the crisis sparked by Prime Minister Donald Tusk's suspension of Constitutional Tribunal President Bogdan Swieczkowski, amid police surrounding the court and protests from the nationalist right. Nawrocki, of the nationalist PiS party, cut short a state visit to Senegal and returned to Warsaw overnight. He met with Swieczkowski and court First President Zbigniew Kapiński before entering the tribunal building through a crowd, while his office cited a "threat to internal security." Tusk's government has sought for weeks to remove judges appointed by the previous PiS administration (2015-2023). The court has often favored Polish law over EU legislation, leading Brussels to accuse it of being too close to nationalist political power.
