Poland's President Nawrocki condemns forced takeover of Constitutional Tribunal
Poland's President Karol Nawrocki convened emergency consultations with political party representatives on Saturday after a dramatic confrontation at the Constitutional Tribunal, which he condemned as a forced takeover of the institution. Seven judges elected by parliament entered the Tribunal building on Friday evening with state protection agents, suspended its president, and installed judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska as head. Nawrocki, who cut short a visit to Senegal, clashed with judges while attempting to enter the building. The Tribunal's pro-PiS leadership called the events a "coup d'état" on X. The crisis stems from a long-running dispute over judicial appointments between the centrist government of Donald Tusk and the nationalist PiS party, which previously controlled the court.
