Polish President Calls Urgent Talks on Constitutional Tribunal Crisis
Polish President Karol Nawrocki announced emergency consultations with parliamentary factions over the crisis surrounding the Constitutional Tribunal, calling the situation a forcible seizure of the court. Nawrocki also consulted with First President of the Supreme Court Judge Zbigniew Kapiński, who opposes the developments. Prime Minister Donald Tusk seeks to appoint new judges to replace those named by the previous government, while Nawrocki previously refused to approve six parliamentary nominees. Tribunal head Bogdan Święczkowski was reportedly removed from his post on Friday, with Tusk-loyal judge Anna Korwin-Pietrowska taking over. Law and Justice party leader Jarosław Kaczyński condemned Tusk's actions as an attempted coup against the judiciary.
