Tusk: Rule of law, not jungle law, after Polish president's court clash
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk sharply criticized President Karol Nawrocki after his contentious appearance at the Constitutional Tribunal, escalating a dispute over the court's leadership. Tusk stated that in a rule-of-law state, "muscles and insolence" do not decide who is right. The conflict erupted after the tribunal's website announced the suspension of its president and deputy, replacing them with judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska. Nawrocki, a former amateur boxer, pushed into the court building past protesters and pressed down on a female judge, prompting Tusk's condemnation. Tusk accused the conservative PiS party and its presidents of destroying the rule of law, while Nawrocki held talks with parliamentary factions without results. The EU Commission said it is closely monitoring the situation, emphasizing the court must operate in line with Polish law and EU jurisprudence.
