Poland's Constitutional Tribunal removes its president and deputy over budget and case-assignment disputes

businessinsider.com.pl (Polish) —

Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska, the most senior judge of Poland's Constitutional Tribunal, has removed Tribunal President Bogdan Święczkowski and Vice-President from their duties, citing three specific reasons for the decision. The removal was based on Article 130 of the law on common courts, which allows for immediate suspension when the court's authority or essential service interests require it. The judges claim Święczkowski and his deputy blocked the General Assembly from approving the 2027 budget, manipulated case assignment panels, and excluded newly elected judges from ruling since April 2026. Prosecutors are investigating the alleged irregularities in panel composition and judge assignments. Under tribunal rules, Korwin-Piotrowska assumes leadership as the longest-serving judge.
