Israel prepared to shoot down hijacked flydubai jet to prevent crash
Israel was prepared to shoot down flydubai flight 1073 during last Wednesday's suspected hijacking attempt, despite over 150 Israelis aboard, two Israeli sources told CBS News on Monday. The Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight was approaching Israel when the co-pilot attacked the captain and attempted to crash the aircraft. After the plane plunged 14,000 feet, Israel scrambled fighter jets, closed its airspace, and activated a protocol for hostile civilian aircraft, though jets were recalled when the plane turned toward Saudi Arabia. The captain unlocked the cockpit door, allowing passengers and staff to overpower the attacker, and two off-duty pilots made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Had the flight continued toward Israel, fighter jets would have entered Jordanian airspace to investigate, with the defense minister and prime minister making the final shoot-down decision.
