Indian Embassy: flydubai pilot Captain Smit Machchhar recovering after attack

gulfnews.com —

The Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi reported Tuesday that flydubai pilot Captain Smit Machchhar is making steady progress in his recovery after being seriously injured in an alleged attack by his co-pilot on September 30, which the UAE Attorney General has called an attempted terrorist attack. Captain Smit was flying FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 174 passengers and crew when the co-pilot allegedly attacked him with a crash axe, causing head and hand injuries with heavy bleeding. Despite his wounds, he opened the cockpit door, allowing intervention that led to a safe landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. The pilot has received global praise from UAE Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He was later transferred to Abu Dhabi for treatment, and the Gujarat government announced he will receive the Visisht Gujarat Garima Award.
