Flydubai copilot subdued after plotting to crash plane into Israeli airport
The copilot of a flydubai flight allegedly planned to crash the plane into Ben Gurion Airport or a Tel Aviv building, according to US and Israeli reports. He was subdued after attacking the captain. The Omani national, identified as Hamam al-Hammami, was described as a "lone wolf" extremist. He attacked the captain with an emergency axe before passengers intervened, and the plane landed in Saudi Arabia. Israeli PM Netanyahu said the crew and passengers prevented an "11 September-style catastrophe." The copilot reportedly told investigators he intended to crash the Boeing 737 MAX with over 180 passengers aboard, mimicking the 2001 al-Qaida attacks. He had been grounded by Oman Air over extremist concerns but was hired by flydubai after standard security checks. Questions have been raised over security vetting and passenger list sharing between UAE and Israeli authorities.
