FlyDubai co-pilot planned Tel Aviv attack before hiring, Israeli officials say

cbc.ca —

Israeli officials say the FlyDubai co-pilot who stabbed his captain in a suspected hijacking attempt last week has told U.A.E. interrogators he planned the attack before joining the airline, according to two sources with knowledge of the probe. The co-pilot, an Omani national, allegedly intended to crash the flight into Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv, and had also planned a similar attack on an earlier Tel Aviv flight this year but changed his mind. The attack was foiled after passengers and crew subdued him, and the plane landed in Saudi Arabia. The suspect, who remains in U.A.E. custody without formal charges, reportedly studied in Australia and spent time in New Zealand, where authorities are investigating. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered a security review of foreign airlines flying to Israel.
