flydubai security lapses across Oman, UAE, and Israel enabled cockpit attack near Tel Aviv
A security failure across Oman, the UAE, and Israel allowed a flydubai co-pilot to attack the captain mid-flight, nearly causing a crash that authorities suspect was intended as a terrorist act in Tel Aviv. The incident has been described as an attempted "Israel’s 9/11." Oman had flagged the co-pilot for radical ideology, removing him from flying duties, but this warning was not passed to flydubai, which hired him without contacting his previous employer. Israel also failed to vet him, despite barring pilots from non-diplomatic countries like Oman and having a database for crew checks. The co-pilot attacked the captain with an axe, but passengers subdued him and helped recover the aircraft from a dive. Investigations are ongoing, with no links to foreign groups found, and Israel has since begun reviewing security for foreign airline flights.
