Democrats retake House as Trump backlash and economic anger drive wins
Democrats are projected to retake the U.S. House of Representatives for the first time since 2020, driven by widespread disapproval of President Donald Trump and negative views of the economy, according to ABC News Voter Poll analysis. About 6 in 10 House voters disapprove of Trump’s performance, with 54% strongly disapproving, a figure exceeding strong disapproval of George W. Bush in 2008. Voters citing Trump’s wrong priorities or self-interest backed Democrats by roughly 70-point margins, and 44% said their vote was to oppose him. Economic discontent was pivotal: three-quarters rated the economy negatively, and 63% blamed Trump’s policies for high prices. Democrats also led among independents by 20 points and improved support among voters under 30, while holding a 7-point favorability advantage over Republicans.
