US midterms deliver historic wins for gay, Black, and Muslim candidates
Democrats won majorities in both the US Senate and House of Representatives in the midterm elections, delivering a significant setback to President Donald Trump and setting the stage for a contentious final two years of his term. The Democratic-controlled Congress will have the power to delay or block Trump's legislative agenda, reject judicial appointments, and pressure him on issues like immigration and foreign policy, including the wars in Ukraine and Iran. His tariff policies, trade deals, and diplomatic relations could also be affected. Beyond the party gains, the elections marked historic firsts, including Chris Pappas as the first openly gay man elected to the Senate, Keisha Lance Bottoms as the first Black woman governor of a US state, and Abdul El-Sayed as the first Muslim in the Senate.
