US Democrats Retake Congress in Historic Election Wins
Democrats regained control of both chambers of the US Congress in Tuesday's midterm elections, ending the Republican majority and delivering a major defeat to President Donald Trump. The party also won five state governorships and achieved historic firsts in representation. Democrats secured at least 258 House seats, their largest caucus since 1993, and flipped the Senate. Notable victories included Abdul El-Sayed becoming the first Muslim elected to the Senate, Keisha Lance Bottoms as the first Black woman governor, and Chris Pappas as the first openly gay man in the Senate. The party also won governorships in Texas, Georgia, Nevada, Ohio, and Iowa. Other landmark results included Peggy Flanagan as the first Native American woman senator, James Talarico's Senate win in Texas after 38 years, and Adam Hamilton's victory in Kansas after 94 years. Republican Senator Susan Collins lost her seat in Maine after nearly three decades.
